Ice Hockey

Ice hockey is a fast-paced team sport. The Skatium has several hockey programs to experience.

Programs:

• Learn to Play Hockey: Saturdays, 11:00a.m.-12:00p.m. For the beginner player to learn basic skating skills and hockey skills. You can try your first class for FREE! For more information, see our Classes page.
• Adult Beginner Hockey: The idea is to learn some hockey skills and improve your skating. Helmet required, equipment recommended. Some equipment available at the Skatium for loan during practice.
  • Adult Introduction to Hockey Skills: Tuesdays, 7:45-8:45p.m. This class consists of drills for adults to learn hockey skating, stickhandling, team play, and the basics of hockey. Cost is $10 for this class plus the scrimmage.
  • We also have a "travel" beginner team that goes to out of town tournaments to play, as well as a women's team. Check us out at www.RustyBladesHockey.net.
• Women & Girls Only Hockey Practice: Mondays, 7:15-8:15p.m. This practice is, as you guessed, only for females of all ages and skill. This is the first time this has ever been offered. It is a low-key opportunity for women & girls to come out and try the sport or improve existing skills. All ages welcome. Some loaner equipment available. Cost is $10.
• Adult "D" League: Sundays 6:00 to 8:00p.m. Players are assigned to teams, and games are refereed. This league is open to beginners through lower C level players, and everyone in between. To join or to receive more information, please sign up on the sheet at the rink.
• Skills & Drills: This is a more intense class for players of all levels. Beginners are welcome with some basic skating / hockey skills. For more information, go to our Classes page. Suspended for hockey season.
• Stick & Puck: Stick & Puck is ice time for players of all ages to take a stick and a puck out on the ice to practice. Sometimes impromptu games form, as well, depending on paticipation. Helmets are required, and a limited few are available for loan. Make it a family affair! Kids, bring your dads (or moms!)! Suspended for hockey season.
• Pick-up Hockey: Play a game. Full equipment required. Adults (ages 16 & up). All skill levels.
  • Wednesdays, 8:30-10:30p.m.
  • $20.00
• Adult League: Tuesdays 9:00-11:00p.m. & Thursdays 7:15-9:15p.m., Preformed teams take to the ice to challenge each other in a full, three-period game. A mixture of A, B, and C skill levels.
  • "A" level is generally players who played in college, Canadian juniors, or professionally. These players have excellent skating ability and hockey skills.
  • "B" level is generally players who played organized youth hockey for most of their childhood and adolescence. These players generally have extremely good skating ability and hockey skills.
  • "C" level is generally players who have some hockey experience. These players are generally in skating ability and hockey skill.
• Youth Leagues: We are currently in the off-season, and not practicing. The season is from September through March.

Youth hockey

The youth hockey leagues fall under the Arkansas Hockey Association (AHA), and are affiliated with USA Hockey. There are house/recreational programs for beginners and less experienced players, and a travel division for a more competitive level of play. The travel division plays against teams all over the south. The youth program emphasizes character building, teamwork, and development of hockey skills at a competitive level, but is open to kids of all skill levels. There are no girls-only teams, but girls are welcome to play at all levels. Full gear is required of all players.

• SS Skating & Skills (Mark Scott) will be holding a mini-camp June 21-22, 2008.
• SS Skating & Skills will also be holding a week-long camp July 21-25, 2008.
